Olena opened the door and entered her flat. “Honey, I’m home.”

No one answered.

She threw her keys in the small key bowl next to the door and walked toward the living room.

“Krystiyan? Nastasiya?”

Nastasiya was her mother-in-law. Olena had asked her to come live with them out of concern for her husband’s recent behavior. There was something … odd about him. He was sort of detached, emotionless even, and more than once Olena had found him pulling wings off flies. That was weird enough, but then a few of the neighbors’ pets went missing, and Olena couldn’t help wondering if Krystiyan had something to do with that. Worst of all, when they went for a walk the other day, she caught her husband staring unblinkingly at the children in the playground, licking his lips.

Despite all this, Olena hadn’t lost hope. She kept telling herself he was still in shock due to the trauma of dying and coming back from the dead and would return to his normal kind, nice, and passionate self sooner or later.

Olena hoped spending time with his mother would help Krystiyan, but that somehow made things worse because the mother and son were constantly at each other’s throats, arguing nonstop about ridiculously trivial matters. She’d decided it was time to politely ask Nastasiya to leave. The old woman would’ve probably been relieved to be rid of her son anyway.

She found her husband sitting behind the dining table and staring at a small piece of raw, bloody red meat on a plate in front of him.

“Hi there,” she said. “What’re you doing?”

And then she realized the piece of meat was a human tongue. Blood rushed to her head with such force that she felt dizzy and had to lean on the doorframe to stop herself from falling.

“What have you done?” she asked, her voice tremulous.

Krystiyan didn’t take his eyes off the plate. “The old hag kept running her mouth,” he said matter-of-factly, showing no emotion whatsoever, “so I took her tongue out.”

Breathless, Olena rushed to the guest bedroom. A pungent stench hit her as soon as she opened the door. She covered her mouth and nose with her sleeve, coughing uncontrollably, and then she found her mother-in-law’s corpse, face covered in blood, eyes staring sightlessly at the ceiling. Everything in the room was covered in blood. There was a huge gaping hole in Nastasiya’s chest, and a quick look from Olena told her the old woman’s heart was missing. She couldn’t help wondering if that creature in the living room had eaten it.

Biting her lower lip so hard that it drew blood, Olena stared at the dead body for a minute or two, remembering how thrilled the poor woman was (so much so that she was in tears) when she heard her son was alive, before making up her mind. Then she went to her own bedroom, grabbed her M-25 handgun from a small safe inside the wardrobe, and strode back into the dining room, trying to control her shaking hands.
